Diocletian Splits the Empire
- rapidly changing emperors made the empire week
- by the 49 year period Rome had had 37 emperors
- in A.D. 284 Diocletian took power and changed the way the army operated
- Diocletian put soldiers at the borders of the empire
- Diocletian also lowered prices on food to help the empires economy
- Diocletian was an absolute ruler
- an absolute ruler means complete control
- Diocletian was the first absolute ruler in the Roman Empire
A Weakness in the Empire
- Rome was loosing money
- Since they were loosing money they to hire mercenaries
- Mercenaries were soldiers that were paid
- Mercenaries had no respect for the empire
Constantine Continues to Reform
- Constantine was a Western Roman Empire commander
- Became emperor of western half of empire in A.D. 312
- Constantine reunited the western and eastern empire after Diocletian split the empire
- Constantine moved capital from Rome to Greek city of Byzantium
- He renamed the city Constantinople; today it is Istanbul, Turkey
- Constantine hoped three sons would rule parts of empire after him
- Conflict permanently divided empire into east and west again in 395
